Ecuador Opens Argentina Fruit Market
In February 2025, Ecuador reached a major milestone in its agricultural trade expansion by exporting pitahaya (dragon fruit) and avocado to Argentina for the first time. Leading the shipment was 11.5 metric tons of red pitahaya, a vibrant and nutrient-rich fruit known for its antioxidant properties and exotic appeal. Grown mainly in Morona Santiago and Guayas, Ecuador’s pitahaya has become increasingly popular in global markets thanks to its high quality and strict phytosanitary compliance.
The same shipment included 24 metric tons of Hass avocados, a product whose demand continues to rise worldwide. While still developing its avocado export sector, Ecuador has made notable progress, with quality-focused cultivation in provinces such as Loja, Carchi, and Azuay. These fruits meet the standards of Argentina’s SENASA, ensuring their acceptance in this new market.
This first shipment was made possible through coordinated efforts between Agrocalidad, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the private sector, showcasing Ecuador’s commitment to diversifying its export portfolio. Officials emphasized that this opening not only strengthens regional ties but also creates new income opportunities for small and medium producers while promoting sustainable rural development.
